Gardensity proposes one future vision for inner-city living in Christchurch. It is a contemporary art + architecture + media collaboration in response to Christchurch City Council's 'Project: Central City' - a plan to increase the population living in Christchurch's central city core, from less than 8,000 currently, to more than 30,000 living within the Four Avenues by 2026.
Gardensity was developed in the months preceding the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch and the surrounding region on 4 September 2010. It was intended to be a visual catalyst for an open and freeflowing online discussion about the future of Christchurch city.
As it happens the destruction caused by this earthquake, and the intense aftershocks and the subsequent demolition of numerous unsafe buildings all generated diverse and passionate discourse.
However the earthquake of February 22nd 2011 brought a new long-term reality to the rebuilding of Christchurch. Online discussions continued to take place on the Gardensity facebook from late March 2011 and these can be read in Archive Part Two on this website, as can the initial Part One discussions of late 2011.
